Up for the Down Stroke is an album by the American funk band Parliament. It was the band's second album following 1970's Osmium, and their first to be released on Casablanca Records. The album was released on July 3, 1974. Its title track was Parliament's first chart hit and remains one of the most well-known P-Funk songs. The album also contains a funk reworking of The Parliaments' song I Wanna Testify under the title Testify. The original title of the album was Whatever Makes Baby Feel Good. As was more or less the case through the '70s, Parliament took a slightly more listener-friendly turn here than they did as Funkadelic, but often it's a difference by degrees. Just listening to some of Bernie Worrell's insane keyboard parts or Bootsy Collins' bass work here is enough to wake the dead. Parliament is an American funk band formed in the late 1960s by George Clinton as part of his Parliament-Funkadelic collective. Less rock-oriented than its sister act Funkadelic, Parliament drew on science-fiction and outlandish performances in their work. The band scored a number of Top 10 hits, including the million-selling 1976 single Give Up the Funk Tear the Roof off the Sucker, and Top 40 albums such as Mothership Connection 1975. Live At Montreux 2004. The first Parliament album since Osmium is also George Clinton's reunion with Bootsy Collins, whose last contact with the P-Funk mothership was on Funkadelic's America Eats Its Young. Parliament affects a studiedly bizarre persona. Graham Central Station on downs, if you will, or the Temptations with a token affection for S&M. Testify, a remake of the mid-Sixties minor classic the group cut in safer days, flaunts a mélange of several separate, stoned voices in search of a groove but is carried along by characteristically close harmony and rhythm work once the pretense can be dealt. Parliament satisfies both the seeker of obscure truths and the diehard soul fan only sporadically and holds an even keel which ignores vocal and track-to-track variation and climax.
